Helping Youth Gain Real World Experience to Prepare for a Competitive Workforce

One of the most recent reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that more than seven in 10 teens in the United States are unemployed. Further, more than 44 percent of teens who want summer jobs never find one, or are underemployed due to the lack of available shifts. For lower-income youth who are less likely to go to college and have historically relied on jobs in order to gain the skills and training necessary for earlier entry into the workforce, this reality is of particular concern. If the young adult is also struggling with a disability, the barrier to employment is even more difficult to overcome.

Crossroads is dedicated to helping youth age 14-21 overcome these challenges. In partnership with Sacramento Employment and Training Agency (SETA), we have programs designed to help youth gain crucial real world experience to prepare them for an increasingly competitive workforce. Whether the young adult is unemployed, underemployed or struggling with a disability, Crossroads can help them create an employment and/or training plan, prepare themselves for work, find a job and get the most out of that employment experience.

Create a Plan

Every individual’s needs are different. Whether you are a young adult who want to find a summer internship before continuing on to college, or someone who is looking for on the job training so that you can be better qualified for a longer term placement – having a sound plan is the first step towards success. At Crossroads, we will help you create a plan based on your interest, your skills, your strengths and your access to transportation to potential job sites, educational institutions or training facilities. We will also consider any barriers you may have to acquiring work experience, and help you outline the steps necessary to achieve your goals.

If you are a young adult who is ready to start your job search or work experience plan, call Crossroads at (916) 676-2540 or email us at

Find Your Job and Gain Work Experience

Because summer jobs, internships and other employment opportunities for young adults are diminishing, it has become increasingly important to leverage community support. In partnership with Sacramento Employment and Training Agency (SETA), Crossroads has programs designed to help youth gain crucial real world experience to prepare you for an increasingly competitive workforce. Crossroads has helped young job seekers find jobs or internships with private sector businesses, nonprofits and local government agencies like, Goodwill, Orange Julius, GameStop, Non-Profit Learning Institute, City of Citrus Heights and the Orangevale Chamber of Commerce.

Depending on your needs and your eligibility, Crossroads may be able to provide job placement and other additional services that will help you become more successful at finding a job or gaining crucial real-world experience, such as supported education and vocational training. You may also qualify for transportation assistance, in which case Crossroads can provide public transportation vouchers.

If you are unsure about what you are eligible for, or where to begin your search, contact Crossroads at (916) 676-2540 or email us at and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Succeed in Education

Youth with disabilities often need extra support to be successful in a traditional classroom or vocational program. Utilizing the supported employment model which Crossroads has provided to individuals with disabilities since 1977, we can help kids and young adults, specifically diagnosed with psychosis or paranoia, to achieve their goals.

In partnership with UCD Medical Center, Crossroads assists youth with a diagnosis of psychosis or paranoia in adapting to school, college, and work life and provide job development, educational placement and on-site or near-site job and education coaching. We work with the individual young adults and their educational or training institution to make reasonable accommodations so that the youth is best enabled for success – in and beyond the classroom.

If you want to know if you are eligible for this program, contact Crossroads at (916) 676-2540 or email us at
